Welcome to Koko AI Teacher ("Koko", "we", "our", "us"). We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about how we handle information. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, how it is used, and your rights regarding your data when you use our language learning application available at kokobot.top and through our mobile app (collectively, the "Service").

By using Koko, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy and agree to the collection and use of information as described herein. If you do not agree, please discontinue use of the Service.

📊 Information We Collect

1. Locally Stored Data

Koko stores the following data exclusively on your device using browser localStorage or mobile app local storage:

• Your language preferences (native language and target language)
• Learning progress including current day, lesson completion status, quiz scores, and vocabulary learned
• Chat conversation history with the AI tutor
• Practice mode conversation history
• Word memory bank with learning, reviewing, and mastered status
• App settings (auto-play audio, estimated proficiency level)
• Session count, streak data, and experience points (XP)
• Daily usage counters (quizzes taken, vocabulary generated, tokens used)

Important: All of the above data is stored exclusively on your device. We do not transmit, collect, or store this data on any server owned or operated by us.

2. Data We Do NOT Collect

Koko does not collect any of the following:

• Personal identification information (name, email address, phone number, postal address)
• Account credentials or passwords (no accounts required)
• Location data or GPS coordinates
• Device identifiers, IMEI, or advertising IDs
• Contacts, photos, camera, or microphone data
• Financial information or payment data
• Browsing history outside of the app
• Biometric data

🤖 AI Service Communication

Koko uses third-party AI services to provide language tutoring, generate vocabulary, create quizzes, and facilitate conversation practice. When you interact with the AI tutor, the following data may be transmitted:

• Chat messages: Your typed messages are sent to AI providers to generate contextual responses
• Lesson context: The current topic name and your estimated language level are included to tailor responses to your proficiency
• Language pair: Your native and target language selections are sent so the AI responds in the correct languages
• Vocabulary context: Previously learned words may be referenced to build on your knowledge

AI Service Providers:

• Mistral AI — Privacy Policy
• OpenRouter — Privacy Policy
• Groq — Privacy Policy

We do not send any personally identifiable information (PII) such as your name, email, or location to these services. API communications use HTTPS encryption in transit. We encourage you to review each provider's privacy policy for details on how they process data.

💾 Data Storage & Security

Koko is a client-side application. Your learning data is stored entirely on your device:

• No server-side storage: We do not operate servers that store user data
• No user accounts: We do not require registration, login, or any form of account creation
• No cookies for tracking: We do not use tracking cookies, analytics cookies, or advertising cookies
• No analytics or telemetry: We do not use Google Analytics, Firebase Analytics, or any usage tracking tools
• No advertising: We do not display ads or share data with advertising networks
• Local encryption: Data is stored using your browser's built-in localStorage mechanism, protected by your device's security

Data Persistence: Clearing your browser data, uninstalling the app, or resetting the app within settings will permanently and irreversibly delete all your learning progress. We cannot recover deleted data as we have no copy of it.

🔊 Text-to-Speech & Audio

Koko uses your browser's or device's built-in Web Speech API for pronunciation features. Audio synthesis is performed locally on your device and is not sent to any external server. No audio recordings are made or stored.

📱 Mobile App Permissions

The Koko mobile app (Android) requests only the following permissions:

• Internet Access: Required to communicate with AI services for generating lessons, vocabulary, and responses

The app does not request access to your camera, microphone, contacts, location, storage, or any other sensitive device features.

🔄 Data Sharing & Third Parties

We do not sell, trade, rent, or otherwise share your data with any third parties for marketing, advertising, or any other commercial purposes.

Data is only transmitted to AI service providers as described above, strictly for the purpose of generating educational content. These transmissions contain no personally identifiable information.

We do not participate in data broker services, data marketplaces, or targeted advertising programs.

🌐 Third-Party Links & Services

The Service may contain links to external websites or services (such as AI provider pages or support channels). We are not responsible for the privacy practices, content, or security of these external sites. We encourage you to review their respective privacy policies before providing any information.

🇪🇺 International Users & GDPR

Koko is designed with privacy by default. For users in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, or other jurisdictions with data protection laws:

• We process minimal data based on your consent (by choosing to use the Service)
• Since we do not collect or store personal data on our servers, rights such as access, rectification, erasure, and portability are exercised directly through your device (e.g., view, modify, or delete data via app settings or browser tools)
• You can delete all your data at any time using the "Reset All Progress" option in settings
• AI service communications may involve data transfer to servers located outside your jurisdiction; refer to each provider's policies for details

🇺🇸 California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

For California residents under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):

• We do not sell personal information
• We do not collect personal information as defined under CCPA
• We do not use personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising
• You have the right to delete your locally stored data at any time through app settings

👶 Children's Privacy (COPPA)

Koko is designed for users of all ages. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and similar international regulations:

• We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13
• No account creation, email, or personal details are required to use the Service
• All data is stored locally on the device and is not transmitted to us
• The educational AI content is designed to be appropriate for language learners of all ages
• We recommend that children under 13 use the app with parental guidance

🛡️ Your Rights & Choices

You have full control over your data:

• View your data: All your data is visible within the app (vocabulary, progress, settings)
• Delete specific data: Use "Clear Chat History" in settings to remove conversation data
• Delete all data: Use "Reset All Progress" in settings to permanently delete all stored data
• Change language: Use "Change Language" to reset lesson progress and start fresh
• Browser control: Clear your browser's local storage for kokobot.top to remove all data
• Stop using: Simply close the app or website anytime; no data is sent to us
• Opt-out of AI: If you do not wish to use AI services, you may stop using interactive features; however, core learning functionality depends on AI

📡 Service Worker & Offline Access

Koko uses a browser Service Worker to enable offline access and faster loading. The Service Worker caches app files (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) locally on your device. This is purely for performance and does not collect or transmit any data. You can remove the Service Worker by clearing your browser's site data.

✏️ Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, or legal requirements. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.

Continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised Privacy Policy. If we make material changes, we will make reasonable efforts to notify users (e.g., through an in-app notice).
